Many incarcerated individuals have a history of experiencing homelessness, and many of these individuals also have chronic health and/or mental health conditions and substance use disorders (SUD). These individuals are at increased risk for recidivism and other poor outcomes, including death from overdose. Supporting individuals re-entering the community from jail with a safe shelter or other secure housing plan available when leaving the jail is essential to reduce these risks. In this webinar and follow-up discussion group, we will discuss strategies for helping people who lack secure housing to connect with needed support and resources at the time of release.
There will be an optional discussion group the week following the webinar. This will be an opportunity for participants to share what has worked in their county when helping clients find housing at re-entry, to hear what other counties are doing, and to ask questions of your peers in other counties about what barriers and successes they have experienced in creating opportunities for emergency housing at the time of release.
